General Worship Acts in the Month of Ramadan

Abu Abdullah (pbuh) said: Amir al-Mu'minin (pbuh) said, “In the month of Ramadan, you should engage in abundant seeking of forgiveness and supplication; for supplication repels calamity from you, and seeking forgiveness erases your sins.”

Al-Kafi Vol.4, P.88

Abu al-Hasan al-Rida (pbuh) said: Good deeds in the month of Ramadan are accepted, and the bad deeds therein are forgiven. Whoever recites in the month of Ramadan a verse from the Book of Allah, the Exalted, is as if he has recited all of the Qur’an in other months. And whoever smiles in it in the face of his believing brother will meet him on the Day of Resurrection only with laughter on his face and glad tidings of Paradise. And whoever assists a believer in it, Allah, the Exalted, will assist him in crossing the Sirat on the Day when feet slip. And whoever restrains his anger in it, Allah will restrain His anger from him on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever supports an oppressed person in it, Allah will support him against everyone who opposes him in this world, and support him on the Day of Resurrection at the time of reckoning and the scale.

Ramadan is a month of blessing, a month of mercy, a month of forgiveness, a month of repentance and return. Whoever is not forgiven in the month of Ramadan—in which month will he be forgiven? So ask Allah that He may accept from you the fasting in it, and that it may not be the last time for you, and that He may grant you success in obeying Him and protect you from disobeying Him; indeed, He is the greatest to be asked.

* Visiting Imam Al-Hussein (pbuh) in the Month of Ramadan

Abu Abdullah (pbuh) said: Whoever visits the grave of al-Husayn (pbuh) in the month of Ramadan and dies on the way is neither questions nor judged (on Resurrection Day), and it will be said to him: “Enter Paradise in peace.”

Kamel Al-Zeyarat P.330

Imam al-Rida (pbuh) said: Performing an umrah during the month of Ramadan is equivalent to performing a Hajj. Spending a night in i´tikaf in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) and by his grave equals the reward of a Hajj and an umrah. Whoever visits al-Husayn (pbuh) and spends the last ten nights of Ramadan in i´tikaf near him, it is as though he has spent them in i´tikaf by the grave of the Prophet (pbuhp). And for those who observe i´tikaf by the grave of the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp), it is better for them than a Hajj and an umrah after the obligatory Hajj of Islam.

Iqbal Al-A´mal Vol.1, P.358

From Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Fayd ibn Mukhtar, from his father, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad (pbuh), he was asked about the visit to the grave of Abu Abdullah al-Husayn (pbuh). It was asked, "Is there a particular time that is better than others for this visit?" He (pbuh) said: "Visit him (pbuh) at all times and at all moments, for his visitation is the best action. Whoever visits him more often has increased in goodness, and whoever visits less, for him it is less. And be mindful of visiting him at the blessed times, for good deeds during them are multiplied, and these are times when the angels descend to visit him."

Then he was asked about the visitation of him during the month of Ramadan. He (pbuh) said: "Whoever comes to him (pbuh) humbly, expecting reward, seeking forgiveness, and witnesses his grave during one of three nights in Ramadan—either the first night of the month, or the night of the middle, or the last night of it—his sins and wrongdoings will fall away from him as leaves are blown away by a strong wind. And he will be as free from sins as on the day his mother gave birth to him. Along with that, he will have the reward equivalent to that of someone who performed Hajj and Umrah in that year." Two angels will call out to him, and their voices will be heard by every living being, except for the jinn and humans. One of the angels says: "O servant of Allah, you have been purified, so start anew with your deeds." The other says: "O servant of Allah, you have done well, so rejoice in the forgiveness and grace of Allah."

* The Virtue of Reciting the Qur'an in the Month of Ramadan

Imam al-Rida (pbuh) said: Whoever recites a verse from the Book of Allah, the Exalted, in the month of Ramadan is like one who completes the recitation of the entire Qur'an in other months.

Fada’el Al-Ashhor Al-Thalatha (The Virtues of the Three Months) P.97

The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) said: Whoever recites a verse of the Qur'an in it (The month of Ramadan) will have the reward equivalent to that of completing the entire Qur'an in other months.

Al-Amali by Al-Saduq P.93

Abu Ja'far (pbuh) said: "Everything has a spring, and the spring of the Qur'an is the month of Ramadan."

Al-Kafi Vol.2, P.630

From Ali ibn al-Mughira, from Abu al-Hasan (pbuh), he said: I asked him, "My father asked your grandfather (pbuh) about completing the Qur'an every night." He (pbuh) replied, "Every night?" My father said, "In the month of Ramadan." He (pbuh) responded, "In the month of Ramadan." My father said, "Yes, as much as I am able." So my father would complete the Qur'an forty times during the month of Ramadan. After my father, I also completed it, and sometimes I completed more or less depending on my availability, energy, and laziness. When the day of Eid (Fitr) arrived, I would dedicate one completion to the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp), another to Ali (pbuh), another to Fatimah (pbuh), then to the Imams (pbut), until I reached you and dedicated one completion to you since I have reached this situation. What reward do I have for that? He (pbuh) replied: "You will be with them on the Day of Resurrection." I asked, "Is that for me?" He (pbuh) responded, "Yes, three times."

* Supplications

The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) said: “Whoever supplicates with this supplication in the month of Ramadan after the obligatory prayer, Allah will forgive his sins until the Day of Resurrection. And it is:

Al-Sayyid Ibn Tawus in Iqbaal al-A'maal: After every obligatory act in the month of Ramadan, whether at night or during the day, he supplicates, saying:

O Highest, O Great, O Forgiving, O Merciful, You are the Great Lord, beside whom there is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. And this is a month that You have magnified, honored, dignified, and preferred over the months; and it is the month in which You have ordained its fasting upon me, and it is the month of Ramadan, in which You revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and distinction, and You made in it the Night of Decree, and You made it better than a thousand months. So, O Possessor of bounty, and none can bestow bounty upon You,
bestow upon me the release of my neck from the Fire, among whomever You bestow favor, and admit me to Paradise by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

Iqbal Al-A´mal Vol.1, P.79

Abu Abdullah (pbuh) and Abu Ibrahim (pbuh) said: It is said in the month of Ramadan from its beginning to its end after every obligatory act:

O Allah, grant me the Hajj of Your Sacred House in this year and in every year, for as long as You keep me, in ease from You, in well-being, and with abundant provision, and do not leave me without those noble stations, honorable sights, and the visitation of the grave of Your Prophet, Your blessings be upon him and his progeny, and in all the needs of this world and the Hereafter; so be for me.

O Allah, I ask You regarding that which You decree and ordain of the inevitable matter on the Night of Decree, of the decree which is not turned back nor replaced, that You record me among the pilgrims of Your Sacred House, whose Hajj is accepted, whose effort is appreciated, whose sins are forgiven, whose misdeeds are expiated, and make, in that which You decree and ordain, that You prolong my life in Your obedience, and expand for me my provision, and discharge from me my trust and my debt. Amen, O Lord of the worlds.

Al-Sayyid Ibn Tawus in Iqbaal al-A'maal:

O Allah, I call upon You for a distress that none can relieve but You, for a mercy that cannot be attained except through You, for an affliction that none can remove but You, for a desire that cannot be fulfilled except by You, and for a need that none can grant except You.

O Allah, just as it is Your way to permit me to ask of You, and as You have shown me mercy by allowing me to remember You,
let it be Your way, my Master, to grant me an answer to my supplication, to bestow upon me from Your abundant generosity what I hope from You, and to save me from that which I seek refuge with You from.

If I am unworthy of attaining Your mercy, then indeed, Your mercy is worthy of reaching me and encompassing me.

And if I am not deserving of a response, then You are the One who is worthy of generosity, and Your mercy encompasses all things, so let Your mercy encompass me.

O my God! O Most Generous! I ask You, by Your noble face, to send blessings upon Muhammad and his progeny, to relieve my distress, to remove my suffering and grief, to have mercy upon me with Your mercy, and to grant me provision from Your bounty.

Indeed, You are the All-Hearing of supplications, the Near One, the Answerer.

Sayyid Ibn Tawus stated in Iqbal al-A‘mal, the recommendation of praying for blessings upon the Prophet (pbuhp) every day during the month of Ramadan:

Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, send prayers of blessings upon him and greet him with peace.

Here I am, O Lord, and ever at Your service! O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, and bless Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, just as You sent blessings and blessings upon Ibrahim and the progeny of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

O Allah, have mercy upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, just as You had mercy upon Ibrahim and the progeny of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, grant peace upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, just as You granted peace upon Noah among the worlds. O Allah, bestow Your grace upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, just as You bestowed grace upon Musa and Harun.

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, as You honored us through him. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, as You guided us through him. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and raise him to the praiseworthy station that the first and the last will envy.

Peace be upon Muhammad and his progeny whenever the sun rises and sets. Peace be upon Muhammad and his progeny whenever an eye blinks or a flash of lightning appears. Peace be upon Muhammad and his progeny whenever peace is mentioned. Peace be upon Muhammad and his progeny whenever an angel glorifies or sanctifies Allah.

Peace be upon Muhammad and his progeny in the first ones. Peace be upon progeny and his family in the last ones. Peace be upon Muhammad and his progeny in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, Lord of the Sacred House, and Lord of the Station, and Lord of the lawful and unlawful, convey our greetings to Your Prophet Muhammad and his progeny.

O Allah, grant Muhammad the radiance, honor, joy, dignity, distinction, intercession, and high status. Grant him rank and nobility, elevation, and intercession before You on the Day of Judgment, more than what You grant to anyone among Your creation. Bestow upon Muhammad and his progeny blessings exceeding all other creations in abundant multiples known only to You.

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad in the purest, most blessed, and highest form, better than what You have bestowed upon anyone among the first and last, or any of Your creation, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

O Allah, send blessings upon Ali, Amir Al-Mu'mineen, support those who support him, and oppose those who oppose him, and increase the punishment upon those who participated in his bloodshed. O Allah, send blessings upon Fatimah, the daughter of Your Prophet Muhammad, and curse those who harmed Your Prophet through her.

O Allah, send blessings upon Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn, the two Imams of the Muslims, support those who support them, oppose those who oppose them, and increase the punishment upon those who participated in their bloodshed.

O Allah, send blessings upon Ali ibn Al-Husayn, Imam of the Muslims, support those who support him, oppose those who oppose him, and increase the punishment upon those who participated in his bloodshed.

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad ibn Ali, Imam of the Muslims, support those who support him, oppose those who oppose him, and increase the punishment upon those who participated in his bloodshed.

O Allah, send blessings upon Ja'far ibn Muhammad, Imam of the Muslims, support those who support him, oppose those who oppose him, and increase the punishment upon those who participated in his bloodshed.

O Allah, send blessings upon Ali ibn Musa Al-Ridha, Imam of the Muslims, support those who support him, oppose those who oppose him, and increase the punishment upon those who participated in his bloodshed.

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad ibn Ali, Imam of the Muslims, support those who support him, oppose those who oppose him, and increase the punishment upon those who participated in his bloodshed.

O Allah, send blessings upon Ali ibn Muhammad, Imam of the Muslims, support those who support him, oppose those who oppose him, and increase the punishment upon those who participated in his bloodshed.

O Allah, send blessings upon Al-Hasan ibn Ali, Imam of the Muslims, support those who support him, oppose those who oppose him, and increase the punishment upon those who participated in his bloodshed.

O Allah, send blessings upon the successor after him, the Imam of the Muslims, support those who support him, oppose those who oppose him, and hasten his relief.

O Allah, send blessings upon Al-Tahir and Al-Qasim, the two sons of Your Prophet. O Allah, send blessings upon Ruqayyah, the daughter of Your Prophet, and curse those who harmed Your Prophet through her. O Allah, send blessings upon Umm Kulthum, the daughter of Your Prophet, and curse those who harmed Your Prophet through her. O Allah, send blessings upon the progeny of Your Prophet.

O Allah, be the successor for Your Prophet in his household. O Allah, establish them firmly on earth. O Allah, make us among their numbers and their supporters, helping them on the path of truth, in secret and in openness.

O Allah, take vengeance for their blood and their grievances. O Allah, protect us and them and every believing man and woman from the oppression of every tyrant and oppressor, for You have power over all things, and You are the Most Severe in punishment and the Most Just in retribution.

[15]

It is narrated that Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn (pbuh) used to recite this supplication every day during the month of Ramadan:

O Allah, indeed this is the month of Ramadan, this is the month of fasting, this is the month of turning back to You, this is the month of repentance, this is the month of forgiveness and mercy, and this is the month of emancipation from the Fire and attainment of Paradise. O Allah, preserve it for me, accept it from me, assist me in it with Your greatest assistance, guide me in it to Your obedience, free me in it for Your worship, supplication, and recitation of Your Book, magnify for me its blessings, perfect for me its outcome, grant me good health in it, expand my sustenance in it, suffice me in it from all that concerns me, answer my supplications in it, and fulfill my hopes through it.

O Allah, remove from me in it drowsiness, laziness, boredom, sluggishness, hardness of heart, heedlessness, and deception. O Allah, keep me safe in it from illnesses, ailments, worries, sorrows, afflictions, and sins. Turn away from me in it all evil and indecency, hardships and trials, exhaustion and suffering, for indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.

O Allah, protect me in it from the accursed Satan, from his whispers and insinuations, his deceptions and misguidance, his traps and schemes, his illusions and frauds, his arrogance and tribulations, his allies and followers, his associates and helpers, and all of their plots.

O Allah, grant me in it the completion of its fasting, the fulfillment of the hope of standing in prayer, and the perfection of what pleases You in it with patience, faith, certainty, and sincerity. Then accept that from us with manifold rewards and great recompense.

O Allah, grant me in it seriousness and diligence, strength and energy, repentance and turning back to You, longing and fear, humility and tenderness, truthful speech, awe of You, hope in You, reliance upon You, trust in You, abstinence from what You have forbidden, righteous speech, accepted effort, elevated deeds, and answered supplications. Do not place any obstacle between me and these things, whether in the form of illness, distress, or grief. By Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

* Prayers

The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) said: "Whoever prays in the month of Ramadan every night two rak'ahs, reciting in each rak'ah Surah Al-Fatiha once and Surah Al-Ikhlas three times, may pray them either at the beginning of the night or at the end of the night. By He who sent me with the truth as a Prophet, Allah, the Exalted, sends one hundred thousand angels with each rak'ah, who write for him good deeds, erase his sins, raise his ranks, and grant him the reward of freeing seventy slaves."

Behar Al-Anwar Vol.93, P.346

From Abu Khadijah, from Abu Abdullah (pbuh), he said: "When the month of Ramadan would arrive, the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) would increase his prayer, and I increase my prayer, so you should increase as well."

Al-Tahtheb Vol.3, P.60

From Ibn Sanan, from Abu Abdullah (pbuh), he was asked about the prayer in the month of Ramadan. He (pbuh) said: "Thirteen rak'ahs, including the Witr, and two rak'ahs before Fajr. This is how the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) used to pray. If there had been something more virtuous, the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) would have practiced it and more worthy to do so."

Al-Fakih Vol.1, P.566

Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Mutahhar said: I wrote to Abu Muhammad (pbuh): "A man narrated from your ancestors (pbut) that the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) did not increase his prayer in the month of Ramadan beyond what he prayed in other days." He (pbuh) replied: "This is a lie, may Allah disgrace his mouth. He used to pray twenty rak'ahs every night of Ramadan until the twentieth of the month, one hundred rak'ahs on the twenty-first night, one hundred rak'ahs on the twenty-third night, and pray twenty rak'ahs each night of the last ten days."

Al-Tahtheb Vol.3, P.68

Abu Abdillah (pbuh) said: "If you are able to pray one thousand rak‘ahs in a day and night during the month of Ramadan and at other times, then do so. For indeed, Amir Al-Mu'meneen Ali (pbuh) used to pray one thousand rak‘ahs in a day and night."

Al-Tahtheb Vol.3, P.61

Al-Mirza al-Nuri, in Al-Mustadrak: Al-Sheikh Ibrahim al-Kaf‘ami in his book Junnat al-Aman, stating: It is recommended to pray two rak‘ahs every night in the month of Ramadan, reciting Al-Fatiha in both rak‘ahs and Surat al-Tawhid three times. After completing the prayer, one should say:

Glory be to the One who is ever-watchful and never neglects. Glory be to the One who is merciful and never hastens. Glory be to the One who is ever-standing and never forgets. Glory be to the One who is eternal and never indulges in play.

Then, recite the Four Tasbihs  ("Glory be to Allah, and all praise is due to Allah, and there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.)  seven times. Then, say three times: Glory be to You, Glory be to You, Glory be to You, O Great One, forgive me the great sin.

After that, send prayers of blessings upon the Prophet and his progeny ten times.

Whoever performs this prayer, Allah will forgive seventy thousand sins for them.

Mustadrak Al-Wasa´el Vol.6, P.215 from Mesbah Al-Kaf‘ami

* The Acts and Virtues of Pre-Dawn

From the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp): "Indeed, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, and His angels send blessings upon those who seek forgiveness and those who partake in suhoor during the pre-dawn hours. So let one of you partake in suhoor, even if it is just a sip of water."

Al-Fakih Vol.2, P.136

From the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp): "Partake in suhoor, even if it is just a sip of water, for the prayers of Allah are upon those who partake in suhoor."

From the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp): "Partake in suhoor, for indeed, there is blessing in suhoor."

Tib Al-Nabi (Medicine of the Prophet) P.22

From Abu Basir, from Abu Abdillah (pbuh), who said: I asked him about suhoor for the one who intends to fast: "Is it obligatory upon him?" He (pbuh) said: "There is no harm if he does not partake in suhoor if he wishes. However, in the month of Ramadan, it is better to partake in suhoor. We prefer that it not be abandoned in the month of Ramadan."

Al-Kafi Vol.4, P.94

Abu Abdullah (pbuh) said: "No believer fasts and recites: {Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Decree} at his suhoor and at his iftar except that he will be, in the time between them, like one who is covered in his blood in the way of Allah."

Al-Iqbal Vol.1, P.185

O my refuge in my distress, O my aid in my hardship, to You I turn, in You I seek relief, and in You I seek shelter. I seek no refuge but with You, nor do I seek deliverance except from You. So relieve me and grant me ease.

O You who accept the little and pardon the much, accept from me my little and pardon for me the much. Indeed, You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.

O Allah, I ask You for faith that deeply touches my heart, and certainty so that I may know that nothing will befall me except what You have written for me. Make me content with the sustenance You have allotted for me, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

O my support in my distress, O my companion in my hardship, O my guardian in my blessings, O my ultimate desire in my longing, You are the concealer of my faults, the one who grants me safety in my fears, and the one who forgives my missteps. So forgive my sins, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

* Doaa of Abi Hamza Al-Thomali

[32]

O my God, do not discipline me with Your punishment, and do not plot against me with Your plan.

From where can I attain goodness, O Lord, while it is found only with You? And from where can I find salvation, while it cannot be achieved except through You?

Neither the one who has done good has become needless of Your aid and mercy, Nor the one who has done wrong and dared to disobey You and did not seek Your pleasure has escaped Your power.

O Lord, O Lord, O Lord (repeated until the breath is exhausted),

Through You, I have known You, and it is You who have guided me to Yourself and called me towards You; And had it not been for You, I would not have known what You are.

All praise belongs to Allah, who, when I call upon Him, answers me, even though I am slow when He calls upon me.

All praise belongs to Allah, whom I ask, and He grants me, even though I am miserly when He seeks a loan from me.

All praise belongs to Allah, whom I call upon whenever I will for my needs,

And I converse with Him in private whenever I wish for my concerns, without an intercessor, and He fulfills my needs.

All praise belongs to Allah, whom I do not call upon anyone besides Him, for if I were to call upon another, my supplication would not be answered.

All praise belongs to Allah, whom I do not place my hope in anyone besides Him, for if I were to place my hope in another, my hope would be in vain.

All praise belongs to Allah, who has entrusted me to Himself, and so He has honored me,

And He has not entrusted me to the people, for they would have humiliated me.

All praise belongs to Allah, who endears Himself to me while He has no need for me.

All praise belongs to Allah, who pardons me as though I have no sin.

Thus, my Lord is the most praiseworthy to me and the most deserving of my praise.

O Allah, indeed I find the paths of seeking from You to be wide open, And the fountains of hope before You to be overflowing,

And seeking assistance through Your grace to be permissible for those who aspire to You, And the doors of supplication towards You to be open for those who cry out.

And I know that You are in a position to answer those who place their hope in You, And that You are ever-watchful to aid those who are distressed.

And that seeking relief through Your generosity and being content with Your decree is a sufficient substitute for the denial of the miserly, And an alternative to what is in the hands of the possessors of wealth.

And I know that the one who journeys towards You has a short distance to travel,

And that You do not conceal Yourself from Your creation, except when their deeds form a barrier between them and You.

Thus, I have come to You with my request, and I have directed myself to You with my need, and I have placed my plea for help in You, and made my supplication to You my means of seeking closeness—

Not out of any merit that would make me deserving of Your hearing, nor out of any entitlement to Your pardon,

But rather due to my trust in Your generosity, and my reliance upon the truthfulness of Your promise, and my refuge in my faith in Your oneness, and my certainty in my knowledge of You—

That I have no Lord besides You, and no god but You, alone, without a partner.

O Allah, You are the One who has said—and Your word is true, and Your promise is sincere: "And ask Allah of His bounty. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing of all things."

And it is not of Your attributes, O my Master, that You command to ask and then withhold the gift.

For You are the Bestower of gifts to the inhabitants of Your dominion, And the One who shows kindness and mercy towards them.

O my God, You nurtured me with Your blessings and generosity when I was small, and You made my name known when I grew older.

O You who have raised me in this world through Your benevolence, grace, and favors, and have directed me in the Hereafter towards Your pardon and generosity—

My recognition of You, O my Master, is my guide towards You, and my love for You is my intercessor with You.

I am confident in my guide because of Your guidance, and I find peace in my intercessor through Your intercession.

I call upon You, O my Master, with a tongue silenced by its sins. O Lord, I whisper to You with a heart burdened by its crimes.

I call upon You, O Lord, in both fear and hope—Hoping and dreading.

When I see my sins, O my Master, I am stricken with fear and when I see Your generosity, I am filled with hope.

So if You pardon, then You are the best of the merciful and if You punish, then You are not unjust.

O Allah, my justification in daring to ask You, despite my persistence in what displeases You, is Your generosity and grace.

And my reliance in my hardship, despite my lack of shame, is Your mercy and compassion.

Thus, I hope that my wish will not be disappointed between these two—

So fulfill my hope and hear my supplication, O the best One whom a supplicant has ever called upon, and the most generous One upon whom a hopeful one has ever relied.

O my Master, my hope has grown vast, yet my deeds have become corrupt.

So grant me from Your pardon in proportion to my hope, and do not take me to account for the worst of my deeds.

For indeed, Your generosity is far too great to punish the sinners, and Your forbearance is far too vast to retaliate against the deficient.

And I, O my Master, seek refuge in Your grace, fleeing from You to You, relying upon the promise You have given of pardon for those who place good hope in You.

And what am I, O Lord, and what worth do I have?

Grant me through Your grace, and bestow upon me Your pardon as charity.

O Lord, cover me with Your concealment, and spare me the disgrace of reproach through the nobility of Your countenance.

For had anyone besides You been aware of my sin, I would not have committed it ,and had I feared the immediate punishment, I would have avoided it—

Not because You are the least of those who see, or the least insignificant of those who witness,

But rather because You, O Lord, are the best of concealers, the most just of judges, the most generous of the generous, the Concealer of faults, the Forgiver of sins, the Knower of the unseen.

You conceal the sin out of Your generosity, and You delay punishment out of Your forbearance.

So all praise is due to You for Your forbearance despite Your knowledge, and for Your pardon despite Your power.

What emboldens me to disobey You is Your forbearance towards me, and what invites me to shamelessness is Your concealment of me, and what hastens me toward violating Your sacred limits is my knowledge of the vastness of Your mercy and the greatness of Your pardon.

O Forbearing One! O Generous One! O Ever-Living! O Self-Sustaining!

O Forgiver of sins! O Accepter of repentance! O Magnificent in bounty! O Ancient in beneficence!

Where is Your beautiful concealment? Where is Your immense pardon? Where is Your near relief?

Where is Your swift aid? Where is Your vast mercy? Where are Your abundant gifts?

Where are Your pleasant bestowals? Where are Your exalted favors? Where is Your immense grace?

Where is Your great benevolence? Where is Your eternal kindness? Where is Your generosity, O Most Generous?

By it, rescue me! And through Your mercy, deliver me!

O Bestower of goodness! O Giver in abundance! O Giver of blessings! O Most Bountiful!

I do not rely on my deeds for salvation from Your punishment, But rather upon Your grace upon us.

For indeed, You are worthy of reverence and worthy of forgiveness.

You initiate kindness as a bounty, And You pardon sins as an act of generosity.

So we do not know what we should be more grateful for: The beautiful blessings You spread forth, Or the ugly sins You conceal,

Or the great trials You have relieved, Or the countless dangers from which You have delivered and protected us.

O who loves those who endear themselves to You!

O Comfort of the eyes of those who seek refuge in You and devote themselves entirely to You!

You are the Benefactor, and we are the wrongdoers.

So overlook, O Lord, the ugliness in us with the beauty that is in You.

O Lord, is there any ignorance that Your generosity cannot encompass? Or is there any time longer than Your patience?

What is the value of our deeds in comparison to Your blessings?

How can we consider our deeds great when presenting them before Your generosity?

Rather, how could Your mercy ever be too limited to encompass sinners?

O You whose forgiveness is vast! O You who extend both hands in mercy!

By Your might, O my Master, Even if You were to drive me away, I would not depart from Your door,

Nor would I cease to plead before You, Because of what has reached me in knowledge of Your generosity and kindness.

And You are the One who does as You will:

You punish whomever You will, as You will, in whatever way You will.

And You have mercy upon whomever You will, as You will, in whatever way You will.

You are not questioned about Your actions, And none can dispute Your sovereignty,

Nor can anyone share in Your command, Nor can any oppose Your judgment, Nor can anyone object to Your decree.

To You belongs creation and command. Blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds!

O Lord, this is the station of one who has sought refuge in You, And taken shelter in Your generosity, And become accustomed to Your kindness and blessings.

And You are the Most Generous, Whose pardon is never constrained, Whose bounty is never diminished, And whose mercy never decreases.

Indeed, we are assured of Your ancient pardon,

Your immense grace,

And Your vast mercy.

So, do You see, O Lord, that You would betray our expectations, Or disappoint our hopes?

Never, O Most Generous! For this is not our thought of You, Nor is this our longing for You, O Lord!

Indeed, we have in You a long and abundant hope.

Indeed, we have in You a great expectation.

We have disobeyed You, yet we hope that You will conceal our faults.

We have called upon You, yet we hope that You will answer us.

So fulfill our hopes, O our Master!

For we know well what we deserve because of our deeds,

But Your knowledge of us,

And our knowledge that You will never turn us away from You,

Has encouraged us to turn toward You.

And even if we are undeserving of Your mercy,

You are worthy of bestowing upon us and upon the sinners, Out of the vastness of Your grace.

So grant us Your favor as befits You,

And bestow upon us, for we are in dire need of attaining from You.

O Oft-Forgiving One! By Your light, we have been guided. By Your grace, we have been enriched. And through Your blessings, we rise in the morning and retire in the evening.

Our sins are before You; we seek Your forgiveness for them, O Allah, and we turn to You in repentance.

You show us love through Your blessings, yet we oppose You with our sins.

Your goodness descends upon us, while our evil deeds ascend towards You.

And there has never ceased, nor will there ever cease, A noble angel who comes to You bearing from us a disgraceful deed.

Yet this does not prevent You from surrounding us with Your favors, And bestowing upon us Your blessings.

So exalted are You! How forbearing You are! How great You are! How generous You are—both in origination and in return!

Sanctified are Your names, Exalted is Your praise, Noble are Your gifts and Your deeds.

You, my God, Are too vast in bounty, And too great in forbearance, to measure me against my actions and my sins.

So pardon, pardon, pardon!O my Master! O my Master! O my Master!

O Allah, occupy us with Your remembrance, Protect us from Your wrath, Grant us refuge from Your punishment, Bestow upon us from Your gifts, And bless us from Your bounty.

Grant us the provision to perform the pilgrimage to Your Sacred House, And the visitation of the grave of Your Prophet—may Your blessings, mercy, forgiveness, and pleasure be upon him and his progeny. Indeed, You are Near and Responsive.

Grant us the ability to act in obedience to You, And take our souls in a state of adherence to Your religion, And upon the path of Your Prophet—may Allah’s blessings be upon him and his progeny.

O Allah, forgive me and my parents, And have mercy upon them as they nurtured me when I was young.

Reward them with goodness for their goodness, And forgive their sins in kindness.

O Allah, forgive the believing men and believing women, The living among them and the deceased, And let goodness continue to flow between us and them.

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, Our present and our absent, Our males and our females, Our young and our old, Our free and our enslaved.

Those who equate others with Allah have lied, And they have gone far astray, And they have suffered a manifest loss.

O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad,

Grant me a good end, And suffice me in what concerns me regarding my worldly affairs and my Hereafter.

Do not give power over me to one who will not have mercy upon me. Place upon me a protective guard from You that endures.

Do not strip me of the righteous blessings You have bestowed upon me, And provide for me, from Your bounty, a vast, lawful, and pure sustenance.

O Allah, watch over me with Your protection, Preserve me with Your safeguarding, Guard me with Your care,

And grant me the ability to perform the pilgrimage to Your Sacred House this year and in every year, And the visitation of the grave of Your Prophet and the Imams—peace be upon them.

Do not deprive me, O Lord, of those noble stations and those honorable places.

O Allah, turn to me in repentance so that I do not disobey You, Inspire me towards goodness and acting upon it, And grant me fear of You, night and day, as long as You keep me alive, O Lord of the worlds.

O Allah, every time I say that I have prepared myself and readied myself, And I stand to pray before You and whisper to You,

You cast drowsiness upon me when I pray, And You take away from me the sweetness of supplicating to You when I whisper to You.

Why is it that every time I say my inner state has been set right, And that my seat has drawn near to the gatherings of the repentant,

A tribulation befalls me and removes my footing, And it places a barrier between me and Your service, O my Master?

Perhaps You have driven me away from Your door, And removed me from Your service?

Or perhaps You have found me belittling Your right, so You have distanced me?

Or perhaps You have found me turning away from You, so You have shunned me?

Or perhaps You have found me among the liars, so You have rejected me?

Or perhaps You have found me ungrateful for Your blessings, so You have deprived me?

Or perhaps You have found me absent from the gatherings of the scholars, so You have forsaken me?

Or perhaps You have found me among the heedless, so You have made me despair of Your mercy?

Or perhaps You have found me accustomed to the gatherings of the idle, so You have left me to them?

Or perhaps You have not wanted to hear my supplication, so You have distanced me?

Or perhaps You have repaid me for my sins and transgressions?

Or perhaps You have punished me for my lack of shame before You?

Yet if You forgive me, O Lord, Then You have long forgiven sinners before me,

For indeed, Your generosity, O Lord, is too great to be measured by the shortcomings of the deficient.

And I seek refuge in Your grace, I flee from You to You,

And I rely upon the promise You have given to those who place good hope in You.

My God, You are too vast in bounty, And too great in forbearance,

To measure me by my deeds, Or to let me slip because of my sins.

What am I, O my Master, and what worth do I have?

Grant me through Your grace, O my Master,

And bestow upon me Your pardon as charity,

And cover me with Your concealment,

And spare me the disgrace of reproach through the nobility of Your countenance.

O my Master, I am the child whom You nurtured,

I am the ignorant one whom You taught,

I am the lost one whom You guided,

I am the lowly one whom You elevated,

I am the fearful one whom You granted safety, the hungry one whom You fed, the thirsty one whom You quenched,

The bare one whom You clothed, the poor one whom You enriched, the weak one whom You strengthened,

The humiliated one whom You honored, the sick one whom You cured, the seeker whom You granted,

The sinner whom You concealed, the wrongdoer whom You pardoned,

I am the small one whom You multiplied, the oppressed one whom You supported. I am the outcast whom You sheltered.

I am, O Lord, the one who did not feel ashamed before You in solitude, Nor did I remain mindful of You in gatherings.

I am the one responsible for the gravest of afflictions. I am the one who dared to defy his Master.

I am the one who disobeyed the Almighty of the heavens. I am the one who offered bribes for disobedience to the Most Majestic.

I am the one who, when informed of sin, rushed towards it eagerly.

I am the one whom You granted respite, yet I did not take heed, the one whom You concealed, yet I did not feel shame, the one who continued in sin and transgression, the one whom You cast from Your sight, yet I was indifferent.

Yet, by Your forbearance, You gave me time, And by Your concealment, You covered me, As if You had overlooked me.

And You protected me from the consequences of sins, As if You felt shy to punish me.

My God, I did not disobey You when I disobeyed You out of denial of Your Lordship,

Nor out of belittling Your command, Nor out of exposing myself to Your punishment, Nor out of taking Your warning lightly.

Rather, a sin confronted me, And my soul enticed me, And my desires overpowered me,

And my wretchedness assisted me, And I was deceived by Your extended concealment over me.

Thus, I disobeyed You and opposed You to the best of my ability.

So now, who will rescue me from Your punishment? And who will deliver me tomorrow from the hands of my accusers? And to whose rope shall I cling if You cut off Your rope from me?

Oh, how regretful I am for what Your Book has recorded of my deeds!

If not for my hope in Your generosity and the vastness of Your mercy,

And Your prohibition against despairing, I would surely have despaired when remembering them.

O the best One ever called upon by a supplicant, And the most generous One ever hoped in by a seeker!

O Allah, I seek closeness to You through the covenant of Islam, And I rely upon You by the sanctity of the Qur’an,

And through my love for the Ummite Prophet, The Qurayshite, the Hashimite, the Arab, the Tihamite, the Makkan, the Madinan, I seek nearness to You.

So do not make my faith feel estranged, And do not make my reward the same as the reward of those who worship others besides You.

For indeed, there were people who professed faith with their tongues merely to safeguard their blood, and they attained what they sought.

But we have believed in You with our tongues and our hearts, that You may pardon us—

So let us attain what we seek. Establish our hope in You within our hearts,

And do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us. Bestow upon us mercy from Your presence; Indeed, You are the Bestower.

By Your might, if You were to drive me away, I would not depart from Your door, and I would not cease pleading before You,

Because of what my heart has been inspired to know of Your generosity and the vastness of Your mercy.

To whom does a servant turn if not to his Master? And to whom does a created being seek refuge if not in his Creator?

My God, even if You were to bind me in chains, and deprive me of Your grace before the witnesses, and expose my disgrace to the eyes of the servants,

And command me to be cast into the fire, and place a barrier between me and the righteous—

I would never sever my hope from You, nor would I turn my face away from anticipating Your pardon, nor would Your love ever leave my heart.

I can never forget Your favors upon me, and Your concealment of my faults in the abode of this world.

O my Master, remove the love of this world from my heart,

And unite me with Al-Mustafa (the Chosen One) and his progeny— Your chosen ones from Your creation,

And the seal of the Prophets, Muhammad— May Allah’s blessings be upon him and his progeny.

Raise me to the station of repentance to You, and aid me in weeping over myself,

For I have wasted my life in procrastination and false hopes. Now, I have reached the state of those who despair of good.

Who is in a worse condition than me if I am taken to my grave in this state?

I have not prepared it for my resting place, nor have I furnished it with righteous deeds for my repose.

Why should I not weep, when I do not know what my fate will be?

I see that my soul deceives me, and my days betray me, while the wings of death have already flapped near my head.

Why should I not weep?

I weep for the departure of my soul. I weep for the darkness of my grave. I weep for the narrowness of my resting place.

I weep for the questioning of Munkar and Nakir. I weep for my emergence from my grave, naked and humiliated, bearing my burdens upon my back,

Looking once to my right and once to my left, while all of creation is preoccupied with matters other than mine.

"On that Day, every person will have enough concern of their own. Some faces that Day will be bright, laughing and rejoicing.

And other faces that Day will be covered with dust, shrouded in gloom” and disgrace."

O my Master, upon You is my reliance, my dependence, my hope, and my trust.

Through Your mercy is my attachment. You bestow Your mercy upon whom You will, And You guide with Your generosity whom You love.

So all praise is due to You for purifying my heart from associating anything with You. And all praise is due to You for enabling my tongue to speak in Your remembrance.

Shall I express gratitude with this feeble tongue of mine? Or shall I seek Your pleasure through the utmost of my efforts?

What is the worth of my tongue, O Lord, in comparison to expressing gratitude for You? And what is the worth of my deeds compared to Your blessings and favors?

My God, indeed, Your generosity has expanded my hope, And Your acceptance of gratitude has validated my deeds.

O my Master, to You is my longing, To You is my fear, To You is my aspirations, And my hope has driven me towards You.

Upon You, O my Only One, my heart has anchored. And my desires have been extended towards what is with You.

To You belong my purest hope and my deepest fear. With You my love finds solace.

To You, I have surrendered my affairs. And by the rope of obedience to You, I have stretched out my fear.

O my Master, by Your remembrance my heart has lived. And through intimate conversation with You, I have cooled the pain of fear within me.

So, O my Master, O my hope, O the ultimate goal of my asking, Separate me from my sin, which prevents me from adhering to Your obedience.

Indeed, I only ask You due to my long-standing hope in You, And my immense yearning for what is from You, Which You have made incumbent upon Yourself of kindness and mercy.

So, the command belongs to You alone, Without any partner. All of creation is dependent upon You, And in Your grasp.

Everything is humbled before You. Blessed are You, O Lord of the worlds!

My God, have mercy on me when my argument fails, When my tongue becomes unable to answer You, And when my mind is bewildered as You question me.

O the One in whom my hope is great, Do not disappoint me when my need becomes severe.

Do not reject me due to my ignorance. Do not deprive me because of my lack of patience.

Grant me for my need, And have mercy on me for my weakness.

O my Master, upon You is my reliance, my dependence, my hope, and my trust.

Through Your mercy is my attachment. And in the expanse of Your presence, I lay down my burden. Through Your generosity, I seek my request. And with Your nobility, O Lord, I begin my supplication.

Before You, I seek to fulfill my need. Through Your wealth, I seek to remedy my poverty. Beneath the shade of Your pardon is where I stand.

And towards Your bounty and generosity, I lift my gaze. Towards Your kindness, I keep my eyes fixed.

So do not burn me in the Fire while You are the source of my hope. And do not make me dwell in the abyss while You are the delight of my eyes.

O my Master, do not make my expectation of Your goodness and kindness a false one, For You are my trust.

And do not deprive me of Your reward, For You are the One who knows my poverty.

My God, if my appointed time has drawn near, And my deeds have not brought me closer to You,

Then I have made my acknowledgment of my sins before You my means of remedy.

My God, if You pardon, Then who is more worthy of pardon than You?

And if You punish, Then who is more just than You in judgment?

Have mercy on my estrangement in this world, And my distress at the time of death, And my loneliness in the grave, And my desolation in the burial chamber.

And when I am resurrected for reckoning before You, Have mercy on the humiliation of my standing. Forgive me for what remains hidden from people of my deeds, And allow the concealment You have granted me to remain.

Have mercy on me when I lie stricken upon my bed, As the hands of my loved ones turn me.

Be gracious to me when I am laid out upon the washing table, And the righteous among my neighbors turn my body.

Show me kindness when I am carried, As my relatives hold the edges of my funeral bier.

Bestow Your grace upon me when I am transported, Having come to rest with You alone in my grave.

Have mercy on my estrangement in that new dwelling, So that I may find no solace except in You.

O my Master, if You entrust me to myself, I will perish. O my Master, whom shall I seek help from if You do not forgive my missteps?

To whom shall I turn if I lose Your care in my resting place? And to whom shall I seek refuge if You do not relieve my distress?

O my Master, who do I have, and who will have mercy on me if You do not? Whose grace can I hope for if I am deprived of Your grace on the Day of my need? And to whom shall I flee from my sins when my time is up?

O my Master, do not punish me while I place my hope in You.

O my God, fulfill my hope, And grant me security from my fears.

For my many sins leave me no hope except in Your pardon.

O my Master, I ask You for what I do not deserve,

Yet You are the One worthy of reverence and the One worthy of forgiveness.

So forgive me,

And clothe me in a covering from Your gaze, A garment that conceals my burdens,

And erase them so that I am not held accountable for them.

Indeed, You are the Possessor of ancient generosity, Immense pardon, And noble forgiveness.

My God, You are the One who bestows Your blessings upon those who do not ask You, And upon those who deny Your Lordship.

So how then, O my Master, Would You treat one who asks You, And who is certain that creation belongs to You, And that all affairs are in Your hands?

Blessed and Exalted are You, O Lord of the worlds!

O my Master, Your servant stands at Your door, driven by need to Your presence. He knocks upon the door of Your generosity with his supplication.

So do not turn away Your noble countenance from me.

And accept from me what I say, For I have called upon You with this supplication, And I hope that You will not reject me, As I am certain of Your kindness and mercy.

My God, You are the One whom no supplicant burdens, Nor does any bestowal diminish You.

You are as You describe Yourself, And beyond what we can describe.

O Allah, I ask You for beautiful patience, And a near relief And truthful speech, And a great reward.

O my Lord, I ask You for all that is good that which I know and that which I do not know.

O Allah, I ask You for the best of what Your righteous servants have asked You for.

O the best One to be asked, O the most generous Giver,

Grant me my request regarding myself, My family, My parents, My children, My loved ones, And my brothers in faith.

Grant me a prosperous life, A noble character, And righteousness in all my affairs.

Make me among those whose life You lengthen, Whose deeds You make excellent, Upon whom You complete Your blessings,

With whom You are pleased, And whom You cause to live a good life in enduring joy, With abundant honor, And in perfect ease.

Indeed, You do whatever You will, And no one can act as they will except You.

O Allah, grant me a special share of Your remembrance,

And do not let anything from what I seek to draw near to You with in the hours of the night or the moments of the day—

Be tainted by ostentation, Nor by seeking reputation, Nor by arrogance, Nor by vanity.

And make me among those who humble themselves before You.

O Allah, grant me abundance in sustenance, Security in my homeland, And joy of the eyes in my family, wealth, and children.

Allow me to remain in the blessings You have bestowed upon me, health in my body, strength in my physique, and safety in my faith.

Engage me in obedience to You and to Your Messenger, Muhammad— May Allah’s blessings be upon him and his progeny— For as long as You keep me alive.

Make me among Your servants who receive the greatest share of all the goodness You have sent down and will send down in the month of Ramadan, on the Night of Decree, And in every year, of the mercy You spread forth, The well-being You bestow, The tribulation You avert, The good deeds You accept, And the sins You forgive.

Grant me the ability to perform the pilgrimage to Your Sacred House, In this year and in every year.

Bestow upon me a vast sustenance from Your limitless bounty.

O my Master, turn away all calamities from me, settle my debts and any injustices against me, So that I am not harmed by any of them.

Shield me from the eyes and ears of my enemies, those who envy me, and those who seek to oppress me.

Grant me victory over them, bring joy to my eyes, gladden my heart, and grant me relief and a way out from my worries and distress.

Make those who intend evil against me from among Your creation beneath my feet.

Protect me from the harm of Satan, from the tyranny of rulers, and from the evil of my own deeds.

Purify me from all sins, save me from the Fire through Your pardon, and admit me into Paradise through Your mercy.

Grant me, by Your grace, A spouse from among the pure Hoor al-‘Ain.

Join me with Your righteous friends, Muhammad and his noble progeny— The virtuous, the pure, the chosen ones. May Your blessings be upon them, upon their bodies and their souls, and may Your mercy and blessings be upon them.

My God and my Master, by Your might and majesty,

If You hold me accountable for my sins, I will hold You accountable for Your pardon.

If You demand recompense from me for my misdeeds, I will demand from You Your generosity.

And if You cast me into the Fire, I will announce to its inhabitants my love for You.

My God and my Master, If You only forgive Your chosen ones and those who obey You, then where shall the sinners turn for refuge?

And if You only honor those who remain loyal to You, then whom shall the wrongdoers seek help from?

My God, If You place me in the Fire, that would bring joy to Your enemy.

And if You admit me into Paradise, that would bring joy to Your Prophet.

And by Allah, I know that the joy of Your Prophet is dearer to You than the joy of Your enemy.

O Allah, I ask You to fill my heart with love for You, With fear of You, With faith in Your Book, With certainty in You, With awe of You, And with longing for You.

O Possessor of Majesty and Honor,

Make me love meeting You, and love my meeting with You.

And grant me in my meeting with You, relief, ease, and honor.

O Allah, join me with the righteous who have passed, and make me among the righteous who remain.

Guide me on the path of the righteous, and aid me against myself with the same help that You grant to the righteous against themselves.

Let the conclusion of my deeds be the best of them, And make my reward for them Paradise through Your mercy.

Assist me in using well the blessings You have granted me.

Keep me steadfast, O Lord, and do not return me to any evil from which You have saved me, O Lord of the worlds.

O Allah, I ask You for a faith that has no end except upon meeting You.

Keep me alive upon it for as long as You keep me alive, take my soul upon it when You take my soul, and resurrect me upon it when You resurrect me.

Purify my heart from hypocrisy, doubt, and the desire for reputation in Your religion, so that my deeds may be purely for Your sake.

O Allah, grant me insight in Your religion, Understanding of Your rulings, Deep knowledge of Your wisdom, A double portion of Your mercy, And piety that prevents me from disobeying You.

Illuminate my face with Your light, Make my desire for what is with You, Cause me to die in Your path, And upon the faith of Your Messenger— May Allah’s blessings be upon him and his progeny.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, Failure, Distress, Cowardice, Miserliness, Heedlessness, Hard-heartedness, Humiliation, Poverty, Need, Every calamity, And from all forms of immorality, both apparent and hidden.

I seek refuge in You from a soul that is never content, A stomach that is never satisfied, A heart that does not humble itself, A supplication that is not heard, And a deed that does not benefit.

I seek refuge in You, O Lord, For myself, my faith, my wealth, And all that You have provided me, from the accursed Satan. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

O Allah, there is no one who can protect me from You, and I find no refuge except in You.

So do not allow my soul to experience any part of Your punishment. Do not leave me to destruction, Nor let me suffer painful torment.

O Allah, accept from me, Raise my mention, Elevate my rank, Lift my burden, Do not recall my sins against me, And make the reward of my gathering, my words, and my supplication Your pleasure and Paradise.

O my Lord, grant me all that I have asked of You, And increase me from Your bounty,

For indeed, I turn to You eagerly, O Lord of the worlds!

O Allah, You have revealed in Your Book that we should forgive those who wrong us, And indeed, we have wronged ourselves—so forgive us, For You are more worthy of granting pardon than we are.

You have commanded us not to turn away a beggar from our doors, And here I come to You as a beggar— So do not turn me away without fulfilling my need.

You have commanded us to be kind to those whom our hands possess, And we are Your servants— So grant us freedom from the Fire.

O my refuge in times of distress, O my relief in times of hardship,

To You I flee, From You I seek help, In You I seek shelter.

I do not seek refuge in anyone but You, Nor do I ask for relief except from You.

So grant me relief and remove my anguish, O the One who frees the captives, And pardons abundant sins.

Accept from me my little, And forgive me for my much, Indeed, You are the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving.

O Allah, I ask You for a faith that firmly settles in my heart,

And a true certainty, so that I may know that nothing will befall me except what You have written for me.

And make me content with what You have apportioned for me in life, O Most Merciful of the merciful!

* Deeds of Breaking the Fast

From Zurara and Fudayl, from Abu Ja‘far (pbuh): "In the month of Ramadan, you should pray first and then break your fast, unless you are with a group of people waiting to break their fast. If you are breaking your fast with them, then do not go against them—break your fast first and then pray. Otherwise, start with the prayer." I said, "Why is that?" He (pbuh) said: "Because two obligations are before you—breaking the fast and performing the prayer. So begin with the better of the two, and the better of the two is prayer." Then he (pbuh) said: "You perform the prayer while fasting, so your prayer is recorded in that state, and sealing it with the fast is more beloved to me."

Al-Tahtheb Vol.4, P.198

Abu Abdillah Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said: "It is recommended for the fasting person, if he is able, to pray before breaking his fast."

Al-Tahtheb Vol.4, P.199

The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp): "When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates. If he does not find any, then with water, for water is purifying."

Mesbah Al-Kaf´ami P.632

From Al-Husain ibn Ali, from his father (pbuh), who said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) would begin his meal with dates when he was fasting."

Makarem Al-Akhlaq P,169

Abu Ja‘far (pbuh) said: "The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) would break his fast with the two black things." I said, "May Allah have mercy on you, and what are the two black things?" He (pbuh) said: "Dates and water, or fresh dates and water."

Al-Iqbal Vol.1, P.241

The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) said: "Whoever breaks his fast with lawful dates will have four hundred prayers added to his record."

Al-Iqbal Vol.1, P.241

Abi Basir narrated from Imam Abu Abdillah (pbuh) that he said: You should say every night of the month of Ramadan at the time of breaking the fast until its end:

"All praise is due to Allah, who assisted us, so we fasted, and provided for us, so we broke our fast.
O Allah, accept it from us, aid us in it, grant us safety in it, and receive it from us with ease and well-being from You.
All praise is due to Allah, who completed for us another day of the month of Ramadan."

The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) said: "There is no servant who fasts and then says at the time of breaking the fast:

'O Great, O Great! You are my God, there is no god for me but You. Forgive me the great sin, for indeed, no one forgives the great sin except the Great.'

except that he emerges from his sins as the day his mother gave birth to him."

Imam Al-Hasan ibn Ali (pbuh) said:

"Indeed, every fasting person has a supplication that is answered at the time of breaking the fast. So, when taking the first morsel, say:

'In the name of Allah. O Allah, O You who have vast forgiveness, forgive me.'

In another narration:

'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O You who have vast forgiveness, forgive me.'

For whoever says this at the time of breaking the fast, his sins will be forgiven."

Imam Abu Ja'far (pbuh) narrated from his forefathers (pbut) that the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) would say upon breaking his fast:

"O Allah, for You we have fasted, and upon Your provision we have broken our fast. So accept it from us. The thirst has gone, the veins have been moistened, and the reward remains."

Imam Abu Ja'far (pbuh) said:

"When Amir Al-Mu’minin (pbuh) would break his fast, he would kneel on his knees until the food tray was placed, and he would say:

'O Allah, for You we have fasted, and upon Your provision we have broken our fast. So accept it from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.'"

Imam Abu Abdillah (pbuh) said:

"Whenever you fast a day in the month of Ramadan, say at the time of breaking your fast:

'All praise is due to Allah, who aided us, so we fasted, and provided for us, so we broke our fast. O Allah, accept it from us, assist us in it, grant us safety in it, and receive it from us with ease and well-being from You. All praise is due to Allah, who has allowed us to complete a day of the month of Ramadan.'"

Imam Musa ibn Ja'far Al-Kadhim (pbuh) narrated from his fathers (pbut) that they said: "When you break your fast in the evening, say:

'O Allah, for You have I fasted, and upon Your provision have I broken my fast, and upon You have I relied.'

It will be recorded for you as the reward of those who fasted on that day."

The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) said: "Indeed, the fasting person has a supplication at the time of breaking his fast that is not rejected."

He should say upon breaking his fast:

"O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy which encompasses all things, to forgive me."

Al-Mufaddal ibn Amr narrated that Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said: The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) said to Amir Al-Mu'mineen (pbuh): "O Abu Al-Hasan, the month of Ramadan has arrived. So, make your supplication before you break your fast, for Jibra'il (pbuh) came to me and said: 'O Muhammad, whoever supplicates with this supplication in the month of Ramadan before breaking the fast, Allah will respond to his supplication, accept his fasting and prayer, answer ten of his supplications, forgive his sins, relieve his worries, remove his distress, fulfill his needs, grant him success in his requests, raise his deeds along with the deeds of the Prophets and the truthful ones, and he will come on the Day of Judgment with a face more radiant than the full moon on its brightest night.' I said: 'What is it, O Jibra'il?' He said: 'Say:

O Allah, Lord of the great light, Lord of the elevated throne, Lord of the surging sea, Lord of the great intercession and the mighty light, Lord of the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Magnificent Qur’an.

You are the God of those in the heavens and the God of those on the earth; there is no god besides You in them. You are the Dominant over those in the heavens and the Dominant over those on the earth; there is no dominator besides You in them. You are the Sovereign of those in the heavens and the Sovereign of those on the earth; there is no sovereign besides You in them.

I ask You by Your Great Name, by the Light of Your Radiant Face, and by Your Eternal Dominion.

O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining! I ask You by Your Name by which everything was illuminated, by Your Name by which the heavens and the earth shone, by Your Name by which the first ones were set right and by which the last ones will be set right.

O Ever-Living before every living being, O Ever-Living after every living being, O Ever-Living, there is no god but You. Send blessings upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, forgive my sins, make my affairs easy for me, grant me a near relief, and establish me firmly upon the religion of Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, upon the guidance of Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, and upon the Sunnah of Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, peace be upon him and upon them all.

Make my deeds among those that are elevated and accepted, and grant me what You have granted to Your chosen ones and the people of Your obedience. Indeed, I believe in You, rely upon You, and turn to You, for my return is to You. Gather for me, my family, and my children all that is good, and keep away from me, my family, and my children all that is evil.

You are the Most Compassionate, the Most Generous, the Originator of the heavens and the earth. You give goodness to whom You will and withhold it from whom You will. So, bestow Your mercy upon me, O Most Merciful of the merciful."

From Abu Abdullah (pbuh) in the supplication every night of the month of Ramadan:

O Allah, I ask You concerning that which You decree and ordain of the inevitable matter, and in that which You distribute from the wise matter, in the decree that is not turned back nor exchanged, that You record me among the pilgrims of Your Sacred House—whose Hajj is accepted, whose effort is appreciated, whose sins are forgiven, and whose misdeeds are expiated—and make, in that which You decree and ordain of the inevitable matter in the wise matter, in the decree that is not turned back nor exchanged, that You send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the progeny of Muhammad, and that You prolong my life, and that You expand for me my provision, and that You free my neck from the Fire, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

Abu Abdullah (pbuh) said: The supplication in the month of Ramadan, on every one of its nights, you say this supplication:

O Allah, I ask You that You make in that which You decree and ordain of the inevitable matter in the wise matter, from the decree that is not turned back nor exchanged, that You record me among the pilgrims of Your Sacred House—whose Hajj is approved, whose striving is appreciated, whose sins are forgiven, and whose misdeeds are expiated—and that You make in that which You decree and ordain that You prolong my life in goodness and well-being, and expand my provision, and make me among those by whom You grant victory for Your religion, and do not replace me with another.

From some of Ahl al-Muhammad (pbuhp) it is said: Whoever says this supplication on every night of the month of Ramadan, his sins for forty years will be forgiven:

O Allah, Lord of the month of Ramadan, in which You revealed the Qur'an and prescribed fasting upon Your servants, send blessings upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, and grant me the Hajj to Your Sacred House in this year and in every year, and forgive for me those grave sins, for none forgives them except You, O Most Merciful, O All-Knowing.

Al-Sayyid Ibn Tawus in Iqbaal al-A'maal, a supplication on every night of the month of Ramadan:

O Allah, by Your mercy among the righteous, admit us, and among the exalted, so raise us; and with a cup from a fountain from the eye of Salsabeel, so give us drink; and from the houris with beautiful eyes, by Your mercy, so wed us; and from the eternally youthful ones, as if they were hidden pearls, so serve us; and from the fruits of Paradise and the meats of birds, so feed us; and from the garments of sundus, silk, and istabraq, so clothe us; and [grant us] the Night of Decree, the Hajj of Your Sacred House, and a killing in Your cause, so grant us success; and the sound supplication and request, so answer us.

O our Creator, hear and answer us, and if You gather the first and the last on the Day of Resurrection, then have mercy on us;
and with pardon from the Fire, so record it for us; and in Hell, do not engulf us; and in Your punishment and abasement, do not afflict us; and from the Zaqqum and the Dhari‘, do not feed us; and with the devils, do not gather us; and in the Fire upon our faces, do not overturn us; and from the garments of the Fire and the tar cloaks, do not clothe us; and from every evil, O there is no deity except You—by the right of “there is no deity except You”—so save us.

It is recommended to recite this supplication every night of the month of Ramadan after breaking the fast.

O Allah, I begin my praise with Your glorification, for You guide to what is correct by Your favor.

And I have absolute certainty that You are the Most Merciful of the merciful in the place of pardon and mercy, the most severe in punishment in the place of retribution and vengeance, and the greatest of the mighty in the place of grandeur and majesty.

O Allah, You have permitted me to supplicate and ask from You, so hear—O All-Hearing—my praise, answer—O Most Merciful—my supplication, and overlook—O Most Forgiving—my stumbling.

For how many distresses—O my God—have You relieved, how many worries have You removed, how many faults have You pardoned, how many mercies have You spread, and how many bonds of affliction have You untied?

All praise is due to Allah— who has not taken a companion nor a child, who has no partner in His dominion, and who has no ally out of weakness— so glorify Him with great glorification!

All praise is due to Allah— by all His praises in their entirety, for all His blessings in their entirety.

All praise is due to Allah— who has no opponent in His sovereignty, nor any contender in His command.

All praise is due to Allah— who has no partner in creation, nor any equal in His greatness.

All praise is due to Allah— whose decree and praise pervade all of creation, whose majesty is manifest through generosity, whose hand is extended with bounty, whose treasures never diminish, and whose abundance in giving only increases Him in generosity and grace— indeed, He is the All-Mighty, the Supreme Bestower.

O Allah, I ask You for a little out of much— while my need for it is immense, and Your independence of it is eternal. Even though it is abundant for me, it is easy and simple for You.

O Allah, Your pardon of my sin, Your overlooking of my faults, Your leniency toward my injustice, Your concealing of my disgraceful actions, and Your patience with my many transgressions— both the mistakes and the deliberate acts— have encouraged me to ask You for that which I do not deserve from You.

It is that which You have provided me out of Your mercy, shown me from Your power, and made me aware of from Your response.

Thus, I have become secure in calling upon You, and I ask You with familiarity, without fear or hesitation, confident in seeking You for what I desire.

Yet, if You delay my request, I find fault due to my ignorance— though perhaps that delay is better for me, because of Your knowledge of the outcome of affairs.

For I have never seen a noble Master more patient with a vile servant than You are with me, O Lord.

You call me, but I turn away from You. You show affection toward me, but I repel You. You draw near to me, yet I do not accept from You— as if I have some favor upon You!

But none of this prevents You from having mercy upon me, bestowing kindness upon me, and favoring me with Your generosity and grace.

So have mercy on Your ignorant servant, and grant him abundantly from Your boundless kindness— for You are the Most Generous, the Most Noble!

All praise is due to Allah— the Owner of the dominion, the One who sets the ships in motion, the One who harnesses the winds, the One who causes the dawn to break, the Judge of the Day of Recompense, the Lord of all worlds.

All praise is due to Allah— for His forbearance despite His knowledge,

and all praise is due to Allah— for His forgiveness despite His power,

and all praise is due to Allah— for His patience in anger, even though He has power over all that He wills.

All praise is due to Allah— the Creator of all creation, the One who spreads sustenance, the One who causes the dawn to break, the One of majesty and honor, grace and benevolence—

the One who is so far beyond comprehension that He cannot be seen, yet so near that He witnesses every whispered conversation. Blessed and Exalted is He!

All praise is due to Allah— who has no rival to challenge Him, no equal to resemble Him, and no supporter to aid Him.

By His might, He subdues the mighty, and before His greatness, the great ones humble themselves. By His power, He accomplishes whatever He wills.

All praise is due to Allah— who answers me when I call upon Him, who conceals my faults while I disobey Him, who increases His blessings upon me, yet I do not repay Him.

How many a pleasant gift has He granted me! How many a great calamity has He averted from me! How many a splendid joy has He allowed me to behold!

So I praise Him in gratitude, and I glorify Him in remembrance.

All praise is due to Allah— whose veil is never lifted, whose door is never closed, whose petitioner is never turned away, and whose hopeful servant is never disappointed.

All praise is due to Allah— who grants security to the fearful, rescues the righteous, elevates the oppressed, humbles the arrogant, destroys rulers, and replaces them with others.

All praise is due to Allah— the One who crushes the tyrants, destroys the oppressors, catches those who flee, is the avenger of the wrongdoers, the answerer of the cries of the distressed, the fulfiller of the needs of the seekers, and the reliance of the believers.

All praise is due to Allah— before whose fear the heavens and their inhabitants tremble, before whose awe the earth and all who dwell upon it shake, before whose majesty the seas surge, and all that swims in their depths is stirred.

All praise is due to Allah— who has guided us to this, for we would not have been guided had Allah not guided us.

All praise is due to Allah— who creates and was never created, who provides sustenance yet needs no sustenance, who feeds but is not fed, who causes the living to die and revives the dead— and He is the Ever-Living who never dies. In His hand is all goodness, and He has power over all things.

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad—Your servant, Your Messenger, Your trustworthy one, Your chosen one, Your beloved, the best of Your creation, the keeper of Your secret, and the conveyer of Your messages.

Bless him with the most exalted, the finest, the most beautiful, the most perfect, the purest, the most abundant, the most fragrant, the most immaculate, the most noble, and the most numerous of blessings, benedictions, mercies, affection, and peace that You have ever bestowed upon any of Your servants, Your prophets, Your messengers, Your chosen ones, or the most honored among Your creation.

O Allah, send blessings upon Ali, Amir Al-Mu’minin, the successor of the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds, Your servant, Your guardian, the brother of Your Messenger, Your proof over Your creation, Your greatest sign, and the mighty proclamation.

And send blessings upon the Truthful and Pure One, Fatimah, the leader of the women of all worlds.

And send blessings upon the two grandsons of mercy, the two Imams of guidance, Hasan and Husayn, the masters of the youth of Paradise.

And send blessings upon the Imams of the Muslims: Ali ibn al-Husayn, Muhammad ibn Ali, Ja'far ibn Muhammad, Musa ibn Ja'far, Ali ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn Ali, Ali ibn Muhammad, Hasan ibn Ali, and the guiding and awaited successor, Al-Mahdi— Your proofs over Your servants, and Your trustees in Your lands. Bestow upon them abundant, perpetual blessings.

O Allah, send blessings upon Your guardian, the rising and hoped-for leader, the awaited just ruler, and surround him with Your close angels, and support him with the Holy Spirit, O Lord of all worlds.

O Allah, make him the caller to Your Book, and the established protector of Your religion.

Grant him succession in the earth, just as You granted succession to those before him. Establish for him the religion which You have chosen for him, replace his fear with security, so that he may worship You without associating anything with You.

O Allah, honor him and honor us through him. Grant him victory and grant us victory through him. Give him a mighty victory, an easy conquest, and a supporting authority from You.

O Allah, manifest through him Your religion and the way of Your Prophet, so that nothing of the truth remains hidden out of fear of any of Your creation.

O Allah, we long for a noble governance through which You elevate Islam and its people, and through which You humiliate hypocrisy and its followers.

Make us among those who call toward Your obedience, and among those who lead others to Your path. Grant us in it the honor of this world and the Hereafter.

O Allah, whatever truth You have made us recognize, help us uphold it. And whatever we have fallen short in, guide us toward it.

O Allah, unite us through him, mend our divisions through him, heal our wounds through him, increase our numbers through him, strengthen our weakness through him, enrich our needy through him, settle our debts through him, relieve our poverty through him, fulfill our deficiencies through him, ease our hardships through him, brighten our faces through him, release our captives through him, grant success to our endeavors through him, fulfill Your promises to us through him, answer our supplications through him, grant us our requests through him, and allow us to attain our hopes in this world and the Hereafter through him.

O Allah, grant us through him even beyond what we desire, O the best of those who are asked, O the most generous of those who give!

Cure our hearts through him, remove the anger within our chests through him, guide us through him to the truth in which people have differed—by Your permission, for You guide whom You will to a straight path.

O Allah, grant us victory through him against Your enemy and our enemy, O Lord of Truth—Ameen!

O Allah, we complain to You of the loss of our Prophet— may Your blessings be upon him and his progeny— and of the absence of our guardian, and of the abundance of our enemies, and of our small numbers, and of the severity of trials that befall us, and of the relentless oppression of time upon us.

So send blessings upon Muhammad and his progeny and help us through: a swift victory from You, a relief from distress, a triumph You strengthen, a just authority You establish, a mercy from You that envelops us, and a well-being from You that You clothe us in— by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful!

O Allah, by Your mercy, place us among the righteous, raise us among the exalted, give us to drink from a flowing cup of Salsabeel, marry us to the wide-eyed houris by Your mercy, grant us the service of eternal youths, who are like preserved pearls, feed us from the fruits of Paradise and the flesh of birds, clothe us in garments of fine silk, brocade, and embroidered satin, and bless us with the Night of Qadr and the pilgrimage to Your Sacred House, and martyrdom in Your cause.

Grant us success in offering righteous supplications and noble requests, and accept them from us And when You gather the first and the last on the Day of Resurrection, have mercy on us!

Write for us deliverance from the Fire, do not chain us within Hell, do not afflict us with Your punishment and humiliation, do not feed us from the tree of Zaqqoom or the bitter thorn, do not place us among the devils, do not throw us on our faces in the Fire, do not clothe us in garments of flame and molten pitch, and protect us from every evil,

O You, there is no god but You! By the right of "There is no god but You!"— grant us salvation!
