The sayings of Imam Jaafar Al-Sadiq (pbuh)

* Imam Sadiq (pbuh) said We are the origin of all goodness and from our branches all righteousness emerges. Some of the forms of righteousness are Al-Tawhid (Monotheism), Al-Salat (Praying), Fasting, hiding anger, forgiving the wrongdoers, having mercy on the poor, caring for neighbors, admitting people's virtues. Our enemy is the origin of every evil and its branches are all ugliness and indecencies, some of them are lying, stinginess, gossiping, alienation from others, usury (Riba), stealing orphans' money, crossing the lines that Allah has set, committing indecencies; the ones that are apparent and the concealed ones as well, committing adultery, theft, and everything that is related to ugliness. Thus, liars are those who claim to be with us yet are attached to the branches of our enemies (1)

*  Imam Sadiq (pbuh) said Those who uttered by their tongue yet opposed our actions and traditions are not of our Shia (followers). Yet, those who agreed with us by their tongue and heart, followed our steps and acted as we did are of our Shia (2)

*  Imam Sadiq (PBUH) said: one of the realties of faith is to prefer the truth even if it harms you, over falsehood even if it gives you benefit (3)

 * Imam Al-Sadiq (PBUH) said The servant is closest to Allah when he is prostrating. (4)

*  Imam Sadiq (pbuh) said Desiring this earthly world causes sorrow and sadness and abstaining from this earthly world leads to the ease of the heart and body. (5)

* Imam Sadiq (pbuh) said:" The people who have the most perfect minds are the ones with the best manners." (6)

* Imam Al-Sadiq (PBUH) said:"If Allah wants to bestow goodness upon a servant, He plants the love of Al-Hussein and the love of visiting him in his heart." (7)

* The servant of Abu Abedellah Imam Sadeq (pbuh) said:" I heard him (pbuh) say to Dawoud Bin Sarhan:" O Dawoud! Send my greetings to my followers and that I say:" Allah has mercy on two servants who gather together to speak of us. The third party in this gathering will be an angel who asks forgiveness for them. Every two persons who gather to speak of us; Allah will show pride of them in front of the angels. Thus, when you gather, be occupied by exalting us, for this gathering of yours and our remembrance is a commemoration for us. Those who have the highest rank after us are those who speak of us and call for commemorating us." (8)

* Imam Sadiq (pbuh) said:" Be informed that continually doing a few good deeds with faith is better in the eyes of Allah than doing many good deeds without faith." (9)

* Abu Abedellah Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said:" There are angels in the sky who watch one, two or three people as they mention the virtues of the household of Mohammad and say:" Do you see how few they are, how numerous their enemies are and how they are mentioning the virtues of the household of Mohammad (pbuh)?" So the other group of angels says: {this is Allah's virtue; He grants it to whom he wants. Allah has the greatest virtue}." (10)

* Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said:"The cause of every sin is loving the earthly world (Al-Donia)"

* Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said:”The best worship is chastity

* Al-Mofadal Bin Amr reported:” One day, I met Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) who said to me:” O Mofadal! Have you acknowledged the true reality of Mohammad, Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Hossein?” I said:” What is their true reality? O Master!” He said:” O Mofadal! It is to acknowledge that they are a matter beyond all creations beside the Green Garden (Alrawda Alkhadraa); hence, whoever acknowledged their true reality is a believer in the Higher Realm (Alsanam Al-Aala).” I said:" Tell me how. O Master!" He said:" O Mofadal, it is to acknowledge that they know all what Allah Almighty has created, brought to life, and called into existence; to acknowledge that they are the Word of Virtue and the treasurers of Heavens, Earth, mountains, lands and seas. It is to acknowledge that they know how many stars and angels are in the skies, how much the mountains weigh and how much water are in the seas, rivers, and springs and that they know every leaf that falls. {No leaf falls but with His knowledge; every grain in the darkness of the earth, everything fresh and withered is inscribed in a clear book.}. All of this is in their knowledge and they know all of it." I said:" O Master! I have acknowledged, admitted, and believed in it." He said:" Indeed, O Mofadal, O dignified, O knowledgeable, O kind-hearted. You are so kind. Shall Heaven be yours and for every believer in it.""" (11)

* Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said:”He who has a grain of arrogance in his heart shall not enter Heaven.” (12)

* Abu Abedellah Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said, explaining the saying of Allah Almighty:{Tell those who have knowledge to forgive those who don't desire the Days of Allah.}:" Tell those whom we bestowed upon them knowing us to forgive those who don't have knowledge; for when they allow them to know us, they have forgiven them." (13)

* Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said:"The company of the Righteous ones leads you to be Righteous."

* Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said:"Whoever mends what is between him and Allah, Allah will mend what is between him and people."

* It was reported that Imam Sadiq (pbuh) was once sitting in the shrine of Ibrahim (as) and then an old man who had spent all his life committing sins came and looked at Imam Sadiq (pbuh) and said to him:” How great is this interceder with Allah who forgives the sinners,” and then he grabbed the drapes of the Kaaba and recited this:

” By the brightness of Your Face, O my master * by the Hashemite and Abtahi!

By the holy words when revealed to him * by His custodian, the champion!

By all the prior Imams * who followed the steps of their grandfather, the Prophet!

By Al-Qa’im Al-Mahdi * forgive the trespass of the sinful servant!

Then, he heard a herald say:” O Sheikh, your sin was great yet we have forgiven all your sins due to the sanctity of your interceders. Thus, if you ask us to forgive the sins of the occupants of the earth, we would have forgiven them except for the killer of the camel (of Prophet Saleh) and the killers of the prophets and pure Imams.” (14)

* Imam Sadiq (pbuh) said:" Our Shia (followers) are known by many traits: By generosity, giving their brothers and praying the fifty prayers day and night. Our Shia do not bark and scowl like a dog nor have greed like a crow. They do not become neighbors of our enemies nor ask favors from our detesters even if they would die of hunger. Our Shia do not eat eels nor wipe over their footwear (during ablution (Wodou)). They maintain the time of noontide and do not drink any intoxicators." (15)

* Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said:" The Imam is a banner between Allah Almighty and His creations; he who knows him is a believer and he who denies him is a disbeliever." (16)

* Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said:“…O Allah! Have mercy on those eyes that weep over us due to their compassion towards us; have mercy on those hearts that are despondent and inflamed from their grief over us and have mercy on those who painfully scream for us. O Allah! I entrust those spirits and bodies to You until You water them from the spring (Al-Hawd) at the day of thirst.” (18)

* Imam al Sadiq said in his appeal to Imam Zaman (may God hasten his honorable advent):O master! Your disappearance has denied me of rest! And narrowed my cradle! And has stirred my heart's restfulness! O master! Your disappearance has joined my lament to eternity's woes! And the loss of one after the other has abolished the gathering and assembly! What I feel of a tear that ascends from my eye, and a whining that drives out of my chest, from the drawers of hardship and prior suffering of what has preceded from grandness of tragedies, and a tough rest that will follow, and calamities mixed with your anger, and afflictions molded in your wrath....  (19)

* Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said:”Bad manners spoil faith as vinegar spoils honey.” (20)

* Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh):" Don't you want me to tell you the only matter that makes the good deeds of servants acceptable to Allah, The Most High?" I said:" Yes I do."

So he said:" It is to testify that there is no God but Allah and that Mohammad is His servant and Messenger, admit and accept the orders of Allah and our leadership, especially follow the Imams and leave all matters to them and acquit of their enemies.

It is to have piety, devoutness, and tranquility and await Al-Qa'im (PBUH)" Then, he said:" Whoever shall be delighted to be of the companions of Al-Qa'im, shall be of those who wait for him and be pious and virtuous. Whoever awaits and dies shall have the same

rewards of those who lived to see him. Be devoted and wait. Paradise shall be for that blessed party." (21)

* Abu Basir said: "I visited Om Hamida and gave her my condolence for the death of Abu Abdellah Al-Sadiq (pbuh). So, she cried and I cried for her tears and then she said: "O Abu Mohammad, if you saw Abu Abdellah (pbuh) at his death, you would have seen a strange matter. He opened his eyes and then said: "Gather around me all those who are related to me." Thus, we gathered every single one. He (pbuh) looked at them and then said: "Our intercession shall not be granted to the one who neglects prayer (Al-Salat)." (22)

* Imam Sadiq (pbuh) said:" O Fadeel! Are you gathering and talking?" He said:" Yes, may my soul be sacrificed for you!" He (pbuh) said:" I love those gatherings indeed so commemorate our matter O Fadeel. Allah has mercy on those who commemorate our matter." (23)

* Imam Sadiq (pbuh) said in his will to Abdullah Bin Jondob:" Our Shia (followers) are known by many traits: By generosity, giving their brothers and praying the fifty prayers day and night. Our Shia do not bark and scowl like a dog nor have greed like a crow. They do not become neighbors of our enemies nor ask favors from our detesters even if they would die of hunger. Our Shia do not eat eels nor wipe over their footwear (during ablution (Wodou)). They maintain the time of noontide and do not drink any intoxicators." (24)

* Al-Hor Al-Amili states in Wasa'el Al-Shia Book: Al-Hussein bin Zaid reported from Imam Sadiq (Pbuh) from his forefathers (Pbut) from the Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) that he said: "He is not one of us he who cheats a Muslim when trading with him. He will be among the Hebrews on Resurrection Day because they are the ones who cheated Muslims the most." (25)

* Imam Al-Sadeq (pbuh) said:”The origin of infidelity are three: care (about the earthly world), arrogance and envy. As for care, when Adam (as) was prevented of the tree, caring was what let him ate from it, as for arrogance, when Iblees (the devil) was ordered to prostrate for Adam he was arrogant, and as for envy, so a son of Adam was killed by the other son because of envy.” (26)

* Imam Al-Sadiq (Pbuh) said: "each one of you should earn all the good with ease." one asked: "May I be sacrificed for your sake. How?" Imam (Pbuh) replied: "by pleasing us when pleasing the faithful ones of our followers." (27)

* Al-Sheikh Al-Sadouq states in Al-Khisal Book: Abou Shoeib reported from Imam Abou Abdellah (Pbuh) that he said: "The most god-fearing people are who stop at things they don’t know if they were licit or illicit. The most worshiping people are who establish the obligated duties. The most ascetic people are who forwent all what is forbidden. The most hardworking people are who abandon sins." (28)

* Al-Sheikh Al-Kulaini states in Al-Kafi Book: It was reported from Ibn Ri'ab from Imam Abou Abdellah (Pbuh) that he said: "We don’t regard a man as a believer unless he follows our orders with determination. Among following our orders with determination is god-fearing so ornament yourselves with it and Allah will be merciful to you. Defeat our enemies with it and Allah will bless you." (29)

* Al-Amali- Sheikh Al-Sadouq: Al-Mofaddal Bin Amr reported from Imam Jaafar Bin Mohammad Al-Sadiq (pbut) that he said: "You must comport yourself with honorable deeds, for Allah Almighty indeed loves them and dare not do disgraceful deeds, for Allah Almighty indeed detests them. You must as well recite the Quran, for the ranks of Heaven are equal to the number of its verses. Thus on the Day of Resurrection, the reciter of the Quran will be told: "Recite and rise." Therefore, he rises to a higher rank for each verse he reads. You must also have good manners, for it allows its doer to reach the rank of those who fast and pray greatly. Moreover, you must be a good neighbor, for Allah ordered it. You must use the Miswak, for it is purifying and it is a good tradition. You must carry out what Allah orders and avoid what He forbids. (30)

* Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘The people of Hell will dwell eternally in Hell because their intentions in the world were such that if they were to remain there forever they would disobey Allah forever, and the people of Heaven will dwell eternally in Heaven because their intentions in the world were such that if they were to remain there forever, they would obey Allah. Therefore, it is according to their intentions that these people and those people will have everlasting abodes. He then recited Allah’s verse in the Qur’an: "Say, ‘Everyone acts according to his character’ [Qur’an 17:84], and said, [meaning] ‘With his intention.’ (31)

* Imam Sadiq,(A.S) said:” Whoever visits me, Allah will forgive him his sins and never dies poor.” (32)

* Hisham Bin Al-Hakam said: "I asked Abu Abdellah (Al-Sadiq) (pbuh) about the purpose of prayer. He said: "It occupies people from their needs and tires their bodies." For, if people were left without being reminded to remember the Prophet (pbuhp) and if they were only given the Book without the obligation of prayer, they would have been like the people of the first centuries. When those people followed a religion and wrote a Book, they preached people to believe in their religion and killed them over that. Yet, when they dies, their religion died with them. So, the remembrance of Al Mohammad doesn't live by killing. It lives through every prayer we perform, when we say: "I testify that there is no god but Allah and I testify that Mohammad is the Messenger of Allah." So Allah obligate in them to Pray to mention Mohammad (PBUHP) five times every day calling his name Therefore, worshipping Allah by prayer was obligatory, so that people wouldn't forget his remembrance .  (33)

* Reported from Yaman Al-Tammar that he said: "we were sitting with Imam Sadiq (Pbuh) then he told us: " The Master of this matter(Imam Zaman) has an absence era. He who holds on to his faith in that era is like who chops thorns with his own hands. Can any one of you do that with his hands?" Then he said: "the master of this matter has an absence era, so servants fear Allah and hold on to your faith" (34)
